The Devon parish of Revelstoke lies just 7 miles south east of Plymouth. Close by is the fishing village of Noss-Mayo and the town of Newton-Ferrers. Despite being very small, Revelstoke held its own race meeting on Thursday 26th January 1843 on a 4 mile cross country course, with 40 fences, several of which were ‘raspers’. The main event was the £50 Steeplechase for which two entered. The bay geldling Claude Melnotte, ridden by Mr W Channing, was made favourite over Negociator ridden by Mr Powell. In the event Claude Melnotte distanced his sole opponent but failed to make the weight at the weigh in, so the stakes were given to Negociator. |
